artist Karen Scata

Karen Scata is a freelance artist and teacher residing on Cape Cod. She attended the Art Institute of Boston where she earned her BFA.

Karen is considered a fauve artist. Fauvism, a French expressionist movement that started in the 20th century, is characterized by the use of pure, strong, bold color. Her vibrant landscapes, seascapes, and floral paintings reflect her extensive travel throughout Europe, Australia, North America, and the South Pacific Islands. Additionally, her inspiration for many of her original watercolor paintings comes from time she has spent clamming, boating, and walking on the beach here on Cape Cod.

Throughout the years, Karen has participated in many juried art shows, winning awards at many of the shows. While living in Hawaii, she won the prestigious Mayors award for her painting Honor the Voyagers. Most recently she was awarded “Best Hard Edge” in the juried abstract show at the Falmouth Art Center.

In addition, Karen’s commercial commissions have included interior design and mural paintings at Universal Expo ’92 in Sevilla, Spain; World’s Fair ’98 in Portugal; and Swiss Expo 2002. Karen’s local commercial work includes Surf’s Up Pizza in Sandwich. She did their mural, faux painting, and logo design.

Karen was awarded a grant from the Cape Cod Art Foundation – and is the only artist ever to have received grants funded from the Figawi charity – in order to create a large stylized sculpture of the American flag for the Cape Cod Centennial celebration in 2014.

She teaches painting at the Falmouth Art Center, is hired by Massachusetts to mentor young artists, and holds private paint parties throughout Cape Cod.
